PC Clinic

Overview

Computer maintenance can save you lots of money, because when you think you need to buy a new computer, it may not be the case. At Vortex Computers we diagnose and repair systems for as little as £35.00. Even if they appear not to be working at all, there is always a solution other than buying a new PC.

Computer MOT

£35.00

Disc Check

We will scan your hard drives and Operating System for any errors, and repair them if necessary. Disc problems can range from trivial things to major structural problems which, if left unchecked could result in possible loss of data.

Having your disk checked at regular intervals can alert you to any potential serious problems such as imminent hard drive failure, allowing you time to back up your precious data.

Registry Check & Clean-up

The Windows Registry is where all the important data and settings are stored; it tells Windows what to do and how to operate, so of course it must be in good condition. We will check the registry for any issues, and repair them accordingly. In some cases, the size of the registry can be reduced by up to 75%, increasing the computers speed immensely.

Spyware Removal/Protection

Spyware is everywhere, but it’s designed not to be found or to appear as something else, so Spyware is common on systems. It’s not destructive like viruses, but they can do things such as slow your PC down, intrude on your privacy, or just irritate you.

After we have removed Spyware, we will install Anti-Spyware applications (free of charge) to protect you in the future.

Virus Scan/Removal/Protection

Viruses are destructive, for the most part. They can do things such as destroy your data, steal your passwords and delicate information, or even prevent your computer from starting. It is critical that viruses are removed, because if they are left, you will get hit hard in the end.

We will remove Viruses and other parasites as part of the clean-up, and we will also offer to install AntiVirus software (Kaspersky 2009) for a small charge of £24.95 for 12 months worth of solid protection, to keep you safe.

System Cleanup

Junk files, broken files and shortcuts exist on most computers, and this can take up valuable disc space or even slow your computer down. As part of this operation, we will remove files which have been left temporarily, such as cookies, temporary internet files, and other files left by installers and software. After the clean-up we will remove invalid files and shortcuts, and also defragment the hard drive.

Defragmentation is a process where files and data are moved to the beginning of the hard drive, so they can be accessed quicker. Windows will just "throw" files and data anywhere on the disk to speed up it's operations, but over time this will slow things down because Windows has to look all over the drive to do things.

Updates*

As Windows has progressed, more and more updates and Service Packs have become available. We will install these updates and Service Packs as part of out MOT. Installing updates boosts your security, gives you more up-to-date software and unlocks hidden functionality in your PC you didn’t know you could get.

Case/Component Cleanup

Dirt, dust and other things inside the system physically can stop a computer from working. A most common cause for damage is clogged up fans. Especially if you smoke around the computer, as the tarry substances in the smoke can get inside through the ventilation, combine with the dirt and create some thick, nasty yellow dirt which can make fans noisy, and even jam them. Computers need constant ventilation. Even 10 seconds without a fan will cause something to overheat and cause damage.

* Updates require that you have Genuine Windows software.
